The Full Story

Nicole LeClair

Nicole LeClair is an Indigenous artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Treaty One). Her artistic journey began at the young age of 6 when she started exploring art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Over the next 12 years, she honed her skills through various classes, setting a foundation for her creative expression.

Growing up, Nicole was largely unaware of her heritage, as her father did not acknowledge his Indigenous roots until later in life. It wasn't until she turned 21 and sought funding for her Advertising Art degree that she was recognized as an Indigenous Artist, despite the minimal funding opportunities available.

Around 2005, Nicole began to embrace her heritage and forge connections with her ancestors' paths. This journey has enabled her to build meaningful relationships with relatives and community members, allowing her to delve deeper into the richness of her culture.

Through ceremony and tradition, she finds joy in fully embracing her identity as a Métis woman. Drawing inspiration from her ancestors, Nicole reflects their beading patterns in her artwork, creating a stunning blend of colors and textures.

Nicole has exhibited her work at the Cre8ery Art Gallery, had her artwork featured as a backdrop for Canada Day celebrations on CBC Television, and showcased her art at the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa. Driven by a commitment to refine her craft and share her heritage, she continually seeks to connect with a wider audience.

She has recently begun teaching children of all ages across various school districts about the transformative art of pointillism. She offers Métis-inspired presentations that culminate in an engaging, hands-on art project. In her wellness and healing class, she incorporates mindfulness techniques, emphasizing the therapeutic benefits of the repetitive nature of pointillism.

Blending her 25 years of experience in graphic design with her Métis artistic vision, Nicole has launched a fashion and home decor line www.metisart.com that embodies her cultural commitment and serves as a vibrant expression of her Métis identity. Through her art and designs, she aims to honor her roots while inspiring others to appreciate the beauty of Indigenous culture.
