Fan Club: When Theatre Opens Hearts and Starts Conversations

Our hearts are full after our inaugural theatre production., Fan Club.

When we first began this production, our goal was simple — to make an impact on at least one person. Whether that meant someone recognizing their own harmful behaviour, or someone seeing their experience as a survivor of emotional abuse and coercive control reflected on stage, we wanted to spark understanding and healing.

What we didn’t anticipate was just how far that impact would reach.
Dozens of people shared that they saw themselves, their loved ones, or their friends in this story. The response has been overwhelming. We’ve touched more hearts than we could have ever imagined — and we are reminded that we are genuinely all in this together.

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and helped us bring this important story to life.

What Audiences Are Saying

“This play really hit home.
This is a story that needs to be played over and over!
It needs to be heard by people before they get in a committed relationship, before the shared ownership of property, before shared debts, before kids, before there is a slim chance to leave the situation.”

“I was expecting a comedy — it was triggering — and I felt the author of the play had been in my house listening to the gaslighting, the denial, the twisted words, the insults that were spewed at me.
I lived this for 31 years... I thought I just needed to be better, kinder, nicer.
I didn’t think I qualified as abused because he didn’t leave marks to show.
Slowly, I stopped speaking because no matter what I said, it was always wrong.
I’m so grateful this story was told.”
— D.E.

“As a woman who’s worked in the field of domestic abuse for many years, and also as a survivor, I was so impressed by the spot-on portrayal of abuse in all its subtleties.
The show captured the confusion, the emotional manipulation, and the reasons victims don’t just leave.’
It also showed how education, understanding, and support can empower change.
So well done.”
— Christy E.

“As someone who lived through, and successfully (after multiple tries) exited an emotionally abusive relationship, seeing this brought to life on stage was powerful.
It put words to the isolating silence of experiences that are so difficult to explain.
Emotional abuse does not get talked about enough — and it is so important that we do.
This is a show that everyone should see.”
— Audience Member

“Love the story and the execution of the play. The ability to transition from seriousness to comedic was seamless and amazing to watch. Brilliant.”
— Garry M.

“Great show, written and acted beautifully.”
— Jenn W.

“Excellent show! Amazing performances, great writing — and the comedy made it so real.
It made for great discussions on the way home because we both know people who have been in this situation. NAILED IT.”
— Janet S.

“Bravo!
I think it’s the most socially significant play I’ve seen in a long time — but still not heavy-handed.
Loved the moments of comedy infused into serious subject matter. Great work.”
— Karen H.

The Journey Continues

Three shows were not enough.
We’re thrilled to announce that Fan Club will remount in the first week of March 2026  — and then we’re taking it on the road to social programs and communities across Alberta.

Our goal is to continue raising awareness about hidden abuse and to remind people that you are not alone. Together, we can end domestic violence — and yes, find healing through laughter, too.
